What is Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT)?
Luxury Vinyl Tile or LVT is an increasingly popular alternative to wood or stone flooring. A default choice for many luxury builds from homebuilders such as Cala Homes. When people think of names like Karndean or Amtico they are actually thinking of Luxury Vinyl Tile. Offering the realistic appearance of either wood, marble, stone, slate or ceramic tiles, LVT is extremely robust and resilient to daily wear and tear. Its scratch resistant surface and water-resistant properties make it ideal for use throughout the home.
LVT consists of individual planks or tiles which are either glued to a sub-floor of quality plywood or concrete, or placed down using a click mechanism similar to laminate in order to create a floating floor. Hard wearing wear layers provide wear and tear warranties ranging from 10 years to lifetime guarantees. The ultra realistic photo print layer offers wood, stone and ceramic designs in a massive array of colours, tones and species. In recent years, manufacturers have developed techniques to emboss texture into their Luxury Vinyl Tiles. Ranges such as Moduleo's Impress use a Registered Embossed™ technique to create definition and texture, not only randomly across the tiles or planks that you would expect in a non-natural floor but texture following the groves, indents and knots of the wood and stone flooring design to provide the ultimate in realism with the added benefits of LVT flooring - warmth, resilience, water and slip resistance, sound insulation, easy to clean, repairable and versatile.
Luxury Vinyl is versatile in that not only can it be used throughout the home including bathrooms and kitchens, but the options and boards can be utilised to create design floors such as basket-weave, parquet, chevron, herringbone and many other designs. LVT flooring is an excellent choice for domestic or commercial use.
How Does it Differ to Vinyl Flooring
While there are similarities between Luxury Vinyl Tile and sheet vinyl in terms of some of the materials used within the layers, the similarities stop there. Luxury Vinyl has harder and thicker wear layers, making it harder wearing and giving it longevity. The boards are more rigid, giving them strength and durability and being stuck to the floor individually means there is little to no movement, meaning the floor will stay in place for decades without moving or coming away from the sub-floor. Individual boards are, from many manufacturers, unique, mimicking the look and texture of real wood or stone, LVT also use high definition prints to create more realistic flooring, while many manufacturers are able to imprint or emboss realistic texture to their boards. Because individual boards are used, if an accident does happen such as a major scratch, a specialist installer will be able to remove damaged boards or tiles and replace them, even from the centre of a room. This simply isn't possible with sheet vinyl. LVT offers grout strips for tile and stone effects and v-grooves between wood planks for added realism.
