Art Nouveau design underfoot
Where Art Deco favours strong geometry, Art Nouveau is recognised for sweeping curves, twisting stems and organic forms inspired by flowers and foliage. Look for rugs with sinuous outlines, stylised lilies, irises or leaves, and palettes that draw on moss green, muted teal, soft gold and warm cream. The movement has a decorative spirit, but the shapes feel fluid rather than rigid.
An Art Nouveau-style rug can work beautifully in a period property, yet it can be equally effective beside simple contemporary furniture. Choosing one detailed textile and keeping surrounding finishes calmer gives the pattern room to breathe. You do not need a fully furnished Art Nouveau interior to enjoy its natural sense of movement.
Making botanical patterns work in your space
A larger rug gives a flowing design space to unfold, especially in living rooms with curved sofas, timber furniture or stained-glass details. For bedrooms, a quieter floral or leaf motif in softened colours keeps the feeling restful. Choose a pattern you enjoy looking at close up as well as from across the room: intricate rugs often reveal more with time.
